Discover more about Residenzpl. 1

Residenzplatz, formerly known as Hauptplatz, is a large and stately square located in the heart of Salzburg's Altstadt (Old Town). This impressive square is framed by significant architectural landmarks, including the Alte Residenz (Old Residence) to the west, the Neue Residenz (New Residence) to the east, and the Salzburg Cathedral to the south. Bürgerhäuser (burgher houses) line the northern side of the square, their core dating back to medieval times. The square's origins trace back to the late 16th century when Prince Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau initiated a project to transform Salzburg from a medieval town into a Baroque masterpiece. As part of this vision, 55 burgher houses and the old cathedral cemetery were demolished to create the Residenzplatz. The Residenzbrunnen, an elaborate Baroque fountain dating back to the 17th century, stands as the square's centerpiece. It is considered one of the largest Baroque fountains outside of Italy. Today, Residenzplatz is a vibrant hub for both locals and tourists. It serves as a venue for various events, including sporting events, music concerts, and the annual Salzburg Festival. During Advent, the square transforms into a Christmas market, and in September, the Rupertikirtag fair takes place here. The square is also featured in the film "The Sound of Music".
