The Staatsbrücke, or State Bridge, is more than just a crossing; it's a landmark that embodies Salzburg's history and beauty. Spanning the Salzach River, it links the Old Town (Altstadt) with the newer parts of the city, providing a vital connection for locals and tourists alike. The bridge's history is long and eventful. The first documented bridge on this site was destroyed in a flood in 1090, and subsequent bridges suffered similar fates. For centuries, the bridge was a bustling marketplace, particularly popular with butchers who found it convenient to dispose of waste into the river. The current bridge, the tenth to occupy this location, was constructed between 1939 and 1948, with its construction being completed after the end of World War II. A plate commemorates the slave laborers from Eastern Europe who were forced to work on the bridge during the Nazi era. Today, the Staatsbrücke offers panoramic views of Salzburg's stunning baroque architecture, framed by the majestic Hohensalzburg Fortress. The bridge is a popular spot for photographers, artists, and anyone seeking a moment of reflection amidst the city's vibrant atmosphere. Walking across the Staatsbrücke is an essential Salzburg experience, connecting you to the heart of this enchanting city.
