Salzburg upon Salzach: A Bridge Between Worlds
Experience Salzburg's charm from the Staatsbrücke, a historic bridge offering stunning views of the city and the Alps.
The Staatsbrücke (State Bridge) is Salzburg's most prominent bridge, connecting the Altstadt (Old Town) on both sides of the Salzach River. The current bridge, opened in 1948, is the tenth iteration on this site, with previous bridges dating back to 1090. It offers stunning views of the city's baroque architecture and the Hohensalzburg Fortress.
Opening times, essentials, and a few local tips gathered into one calmer, easier-to-scan planning section.
Walking
If you are in the Altstadt (Old Town), head towards the Salzach river. From the Getreidegasse (the famous shopping street), walk towards the end until you reach the riverbank. Once you arrive at the river, the Staatsbrücke will be directly in front of you. The bridge connects the Altstadt to the Neustadt, offering a beautiful view of both sides of the river.
Public Transport
From Salzburg's main train station, take bus line 3, 5, 6 or 25 to the Rathaus station. This is the first stop after crossing the Salzach river. From Mirabellplatz, take bus line 4 or 8 and get off at the Staatsbrücke stop. Single tickets for the core zone of Salzburg cost around €2-3.
Parking
Several car parks are available in Salzburg's city center. Mönchsberggarage costs €3.30 per hour. Parkgarage Raiffeisen costs €4.80 per hour. Street parking is limited to three hours and costs €1.50 per hour. P+R car parks are located outside the city center and offer a combo ticket for €15, including an all-day pass for up to five people on public transport.
