Discover more about Freyschlösschen, Mönchsberg, Salzburg

Perched atop the Mönchsberg, the Freyschlösschen, or Red Tower, offers a glimpse into Salzburg's rich history. First documented in 1380, the tower was initially constructed as part of the city's defenses, securing the link between Mönchsberg and Festungsberg. Over the centuries, the tower has undergone numerous transformations. In 1822, it was acquired by the monastery of St. Peter and associated with agricultural activities. In 1862, Carl von Frey, a merchant, purchased the tower, renovated it in the style of a knight's castle, and made it his residence. His son, Max von Frey, a doctor, further expanded the property in the neo-Gothic style. By this time, it was known as Freyschlössl. In the 20th century, the building fell into disrepair but was renovated in 2009 by a local wood company manager. The Freyschlössl remains a private property and is not open for public viewing. However, its location on Mönchsberg allows visitors to admire its exterior and capture stunning photographs with the Hohensalzburg Fortress in the background. The surrounding paths offer serene moments away from the city, making it a worthwhile destination for history enthusiasts and photography lovers.
