Annakapelle: A Sanctuary in Schladming's Embrace

Nestled in the heart of Schladming, the Annakapelle stands as a reminder of the town's layered past. More than just a religious structure, this chapel encapsulates centuries of history, art, and cultural evolution. Located northeast of the Stadtpfarrkirche (main parish church) within the town's cemetery, the Annakapelle offers visitors a serene escape. The chapel's origins trace back to the 14th century when Schladming was a burgeoning mining town. Originally constructed as a Karner, or charnel house, the two-story building served as a repository for skeletal remains, a common practice in medieval Europe due to limited burial space. This initial function imbues the Annakapelle with an aura of solemnity and reflection. In 1618, a fire partially destroyed the chapel. However, it was rebuilt in 1630, retaining its two-story design. The upper story features a cross-ribbed vaulted ceiling with a single-bay choir. Over the centuries, the Annakapelle has undergone several transformations. In recent years, a revitalization project has restored the ossuary in the lower chapel and adapted the upper chapel into a versatile cultural space. The upper chapel now serves as a venue for cultural events, exhibitions, and community gatherings. Movable wooden benches and tables allow for flexible configurations, accommodating a wide range of activities. One of the most intriguing aspects is the restored ossuary in the lower chapel. Closed off for approximately 200 years, the crypt was reopened during the revitalization project, revealing a collection of anonymous human bones and skulls.
