Discover more about Bärenschützklamm

Bärenschützklamm, nestled in the Almenland Nature Park near Mixnitz, Austria, is a breathtaking gorge carved over millennia by the Mixnitzbach stream. The gorge has been a natural monument since 1978. The Bärenschützklamm presents a unique and unforgettable hiking experience. The first ascent was made in 1896 by the Graz Alpine Club, with one fatality. The club constructed the first wooden bridges and ladders in 1901, officially opening the gorge to tourism. Since 1948, the Austrian Alpine Club (ÖAV), Mixnitz section, has maintained the gorge. The trail winds through the narrow gorge, ascending over 300 meters via 168 wooden bridges and ladders. These structures allow hikers to safely navigate alongside the Mixnitzbach stream as it plunges downwards in a series of waterfalls. The towering limestone walls, reaching up to 300 meters in height, create an awe-inspiring atmosphere. Karst springs, caves, and potholes are testaments to the erosive power of water over millions of years. The hike is moderately challenging, requiring a good level of fitness and sturdy footwear. Due to the challenging nature of the trail, dogs and very small children are not permitted. The Bärenschützklamm is classified as a black mountain hiking trail and places high demands on surefootedness, a head for heights, and physical fitness. The one-way system ensures a smooth flow of traffic, with the return journey typically via the Prügelweg, a winding path through the forest. Several hiking options are available, catering to different fitness levels and time constraints.
