In contrast to Schloss Murau, which was erected in the 13th century by the Liechtensteiners, Burg Grünfels was referred to as the 'old castle' in 1400.Until 1515, Grünfels had its own caretaker and was administered separately from Murau. Originally, the castle was a defensive complex featuring a chapel, a defensive tower, residential buildings, a surrounding wall, and a moat on its south side. Today, visitors can explore the grounds and imagine life in medieval Austria. The castle offers a peaceful retreat and panoramic views of the surrounding Styrian mountains.
