Discover more about Burg Oberkapfenberg

Perched high above the town of Kapfenberg in Styria, Austria, Burg Oberkapfenberg stands as a testament to medieval history and architectural prowess. First documented in 1173 as 'Chaffenberch' (castle on the Ausschauberg), this imposing hilltop castle has witnessed centuries of change. It has served as a strategic stronghold, a noble residence, and a cultural hub. The castle's origins trace back to the 12th century when it was initially constructed as a defensive structure. In the 13th century, the influential Counts of Stubenberg transformed it into their primary residence and administrative center, shaping its layout and character. Around 1550, a significant reconstruction project converted the castle into a Renaissance fortress, reflecting the evolving military and architectural styles of the era. This transformation involved reinforcing the defenses and adding new structures to enhance its strategic value. However, the castle's fortunes waned in 1739 when the Stubenberg family relocated to Schloss Wieden an der Mürz. Burg Oberkapfenberg was left vacant, gradually falling into ruin. For over two centuries, the once-proud fortress deteriorated, its walls crumbling and its chambers exposed to the elements. It wasn't until 1953 that Count von Stubenberg initiated a restoration project, envisioning a Burghotel that would incorporate the ruins of the old castle. While this venture showed promise, it ultimately faced financial difficulties, and the castle was once again abandoned in 1985. In 1992, the town of Kapfenberg stepped in to rescue Burg Oberkapfenberg from further decay. The municipality purchased the castle and established an association dedicated to its complete restoration. This marked a turning point in the castle's history, as dedicated efforts were made to preserve its historical integrity while transforming it into a vibrant cultural and tourist destination. In 1994, the Burgrestaurant was opened, signaling a new era for the castle as a place of hospitality and gathering. Today, Burg Oberkapfenberg offers a diverse array of attractions and activities for visitors. The castle museum showcases the rich history of the region, with exhibits such as 'Border Trips – A Journey Through Time with Crusaders and Alchemists,' which transports visitors back to the medieval era. One of the castle's most popular features is its falconry, where visitors can witness bird of prey shows. Each year, Burg Oberkapfenberg hosts the Knights Festival, one of the largest and most spectacular medieval events in Austria. Throughout the year, Burg Oberkapfenberg hosts a variety of events, including concerts, theatrical performances, and art exhibitions. Beyond its historical and cultural attractions, Burg Oberkapfenberg also offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. From its elevated position, visitors can admire the town of Kapfenberg and the rolling hills of Styria.
