Discover more about Burgruine Fohnsdorf

Burgruine Fohnsdorf, or Fohnsdorf Castle Ruins, stands overlooking the town of Fohnsdorf in the Murtal region of Styria, Austria. More than just old stones, the ruin whispers tales of centuries past. Its origins trace back to the 9th century, becoming a stronghold for the Archbishops of Salzburg. The first documented mention dates back to 1252. Throughout its history, Burgruine Fohnsdorf has faced prosperity and destruction. In 1292, Duke Albrecht I of Austria razed the castle, but it was rebuilt in 1296 after King Adolf of Nassau granted permission to Archbishop Konrad IV. The Fohnsdorf family, taking their name from the castle, rose to prominence in Styria. By the 16th century, the castle was abandoned. Today, only Mauerreste (wall remains) of the Bergfried (keep) and Palas (main building) from the 14th century remain. In 2020, the “Steiermark Herz” monument and the Fohnsdorf Reconciliation Cross were erected near the ruin, symbolizing openness and respect. The site is open year-round with free admission.
