Discover more about Burgtor

The Burgtor, located at the intersection of Hofgasse and Erzherzog-Johann-Allee, serves as a powerful reminder of Graz's history. This imposing gate was initially built in the 14th and 15th centuries as part of the city's defenses. Over the centuries, it has also been known as the Pfarrtor and St.-Gilgen-Tor. The addition of the Grazer Burg (Graz Castle) in 1440 gave the gate its current name. The Burgtor's architecture is notable for its contrasting styles. The side facing the city has a simple Gothic design, while the side facing the Stadtpark (City Park) showcases Renaissance elements. For over 300 years, from 1479 to 1784, the gate remained closed due to security concerns stemming from conflicts with the Turks and Hungarians. It only reopened after Emperor Joseph II declared Graz an 'open city'. Today, the Burgtor is more than just a historical monument; it's a place for reflection. An inscription, created by German artist Jochen Gerz, serves as a memorial to the victims of National Socialism. The nearby Stadtpark provides a lush, green setting for leisurely strolls and photo opportunities. The Burgtor is also conveniently located near other attractions, including the UNESCO World Heritage historic center, Schlossberg hill, and the iconic clock tower.
