Semmering Hirschenkogel, rising to 1,340 meters, is a mountain that has transformed from a summer retreat for Viennese elites in the 19th century to a modern, year-round adventure destination. The construction of the Semmering Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage site, put Semmering on the map, attracting artists, intellectuals, and aristocracy.
Today, Semmering Hirschenkogel offers a diverse range of activities. In winter, it's a bustling ski resort with 14 kilometers of slopes for all skill levels, including a World Cup run and night skiing. A 3-kilometer toboggan run provides fun for all ages. As the snow melts, the mountain becomes a haven for hikers and bikers, with numerous trails winding through forests and meadows. The Bikepark Semmering features downhill trails for mountain bikers, and the forest ropes course offers an adrenaline-pumping adventure. Other attractions include the Millennium Observatory, offering panoramic views, and the Liechtensteinhaus, a mountain restaurant serving local cuisine.

Getting There
Public Transport
From Vienna or Graz, take a train to Semmering Bahnhof. From the station, you can either walk to the Hirschenkogel valley station (approx. 25 minutes), take a taxi, or use the RUFbus Semmering-Rax. The RUFbus offers affordable transport to the valley station. Check the Postbus shuttle app or call +43 660 900 88 22 for RUFbus schedules. Train tickets from Vienna cost approximately €40 for a round trip. A RUFbus ride is free or low cost.
Driving
From Vienna, take the A2 Südautobahn to the S6 Semmering-Schnellstraße and take the Maria Schutz exit. From Graz, take the S6 Semmering motorway and exit at Spital/Semmering. Follow signs to Semmering and then to the Hirschenkogel valley station at Carolusstraße 3. Free parking is available at the valley station. Four charging stations are available for electric vehicles. Note that during peak season, parking may be limited.
Cable Car
Once at the valley station, take the 8-seater gondola lift up to the Hirschenkogel summit. A single ride (up or down) costs €21 for adults, €18 for youth/seniors, and €15 for children. An uphill and downhill ride costs €29 for adults, €24 for youth/seniors, and €19 for children. The cable car operates daily from 9:00 to 17:00 during the summer season (June 19 - August 31).
