Burgruine Losenstein, also known as Losenstein Castle, is a striking castle ruin located in Upper Austria, rising dramatically above the village of Losenstein. Perched on a 60-meter dolomite rock, the castle is one of the largest and oldest ruins in the region. Built in the 12th century by the Styrian Ottokars, it served as a strategic defense. Throughout its history, Burgruine Losenstein was owned by the Lords of Losenstein from 1252 until their extinction in 1692. The castle's original structure is still visible, with exterior walls, gothic windows, and large arches that delineate the church, living areas, and economic spaces. Today, the ruins are freely accessible and offer stunning views of Losenstein, the Enns River, and the foothills towards Styria. The castle grounds are ideal for families, offering exploration and play among the ancient walls. Numerous seating areas and a meadow-covered courtyard with shady trees provide a beautiful setting for picnics. The site also hosts plays and historical tours, and has a rock climbing area.
