Founded in 1671, when two Viennese Carmelites sought a suitable location for a convent and church, the complex has evolved over centuries into the Baroque masterpiece seen today. The convent's presence has significantly shaped the spiritual landscape of Linz, offering a sanctuary of peace and contemplation in the heart of the city.The foundation stone for the present church was laid in 1690 by Governor Franz Joseph von Lamberg, and construction concluded in 1710. The church's design was modeled after St. Joseph's Church in Vienna, reflecting the architectural trends of the time. A second construction phase took place between 1720 and 1726, further enhancing the church's grandeur. The west facade, heavily influenced by the Carmelite Church in Prague, was modernized by architects Martin Witwer and Johann Michael Prunner.The interior is adorned with stuccos by Diego Francesco Carlone and Paolo d'Allio, showcasing the artistic skills of the era. Figures of Saint Theresa and Saint John flank the main portal, while a colossal statue of Saint Joseph resides in the gable niche, added in 1722. The church's single-nave barrel-vaulted design features four bays and shallow niches on each side, creating a sense of spaciousness and serenity. The high altar image of the Holy Family, created by Martino Altomonte in 1724, serves as a focal point, complemented by stucco sculptures on the side altars by Diego Carlone.
