Discover more about Burgruine Mödling

Burgruine Mödling, also known as Burg Mödling, is a striking castle ruin situated above the Mödlingbach Valley in Lower Austria. Nestled within the Föhrenberge Nature Park, the castle's rocky perch provides panoramic views of the town of Mödling to the east and the Husarentempel to the west. The castle's history dates back to at least 1002, with significant construction occurring in the latter half of the 12th century. It initially served as a widow's residence for Theodora, a niece of the Byzantine Emperor Manuel I, and later became the seat of a branch of the Babenberg family. Throughout its history, Burgruine Mödling was more focused on the arts than military conflicts, evidenced by its patronage of Minnesänger and other artists. The castle's chapel was dedicated to St. Pancras. Burgruine Mödling was one of the largest castles in Austria during the 12th century. However, its importance diminished over time, and it suffered damage during the First Turkish Siege of Vienna in 1529. A lightning strike in 1556 further contributed to its ruin. In the 19th century, Prince Johann I of Liechtenstein restored parts of the ruins, and in the late 20th century, the Museumsverein Mödling worked to preserve the remaining structures. Today, the town of Mödling has renovated the site, creating a walking tour with explanatory panels. Visitors can explore the ruins, enjoy the scenic beauty of the surrounding nature park, and learn about the castle's history.
