Discover more about Kalenderberg

Kalenderberg, rising to 332 meters, is more than just a hill; it's a tapestry of history, nature, and recreational opportunities. Located on the eastern edge of the Vienna Woods in Lower Austria, it lies within Mödling and Maria Enzersdorf, offering an escape from Vienna. Its slopes, covered in pine forests, invite hikers to explore trails and uncover secrets. The mountain's name may come from its afforestation under Prince Liechtenstein, possibly from "Kahlländerberg" (bare land mountain). Local lore connects it to a Celtic root. Kalenderberg has been a landmark throughout history. A Hallstatt-period settlement, dating back to the early Iron Age (750 to 450 BC), was located on the plateau. Considered one of the most important hilltop settlements in Lower Austria, it was strategically positioned with steep drop-offs. Excavations unearthed fragments of "moon idols" and decorated pottery, leading to the concept of a distinct "Kalenderberg culture," a regional variant of the eastern Hallstatt culture. The rampart is unique in the Vienna Basin for its Hallstatt-era construction. Today, Kalenderberg is a popular destination for hikers and nature lovers. Trails crisscross the mountain, catering to various skill levels, leading past landmarks, through forests, and to viewpoints. The Black Tower, built on an old lookout, offers panoramic views. The amphitheater, designed to resemble a Roman ruin, adds classical grandeur. Picnic sites and benches are scattered throughout the area.
