Discover more about Museum of Military History

The Museum of Military History (Heeresgeschichtliches Museum) in Vienna offers a comprehensive look at Austrian military history. Located in the Arsenal, a military complex built after the 1848/49 revolution, the museum itself was established in 1856, making it one of Vienna's oldest museums. The building's architecture blends Moorish-Byzantine and neo-Gothic styles. The museum's collection spans from the late 16th century to 1945, covering the Habsburg monarchy and Austria's role in major conflicts. Exhibits include weaponry, armors, tanks, aircraft, uniforms, flags, paintings, and photographs. Key highlights include artifacts from the Ottoman Wars, Prince Eugene's era, and World War I. A notable exhibit displays the car in which Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife were assassinated in Sarajevo in 1914, an event that triggered World War I. The museum also features a Marine Hall, dedicated to Austria's naval history. The Field Marshals' Hall displays 56 statues of Austrian military commanders. Currently, some of the museum's halls are undergoing renovation, with the oldest exhibition halls (1600-1800) closed for an extended period and the collection area from 1938-1955 under reorganization until Spring 2026.
