Discover more about Katholische Kirche Hietzing (Maria Geburt)

Katholische Kirche Hietzing, or Maria Geburt (Mary's Nativity), is a Roman Catholic parish and pilgrimage church located in the Hietzing district of Vienna. This architectural gem offers a serene escape from the city's hustle and bustle, inviting visitors to explore its history, art, and faith. The church's origins trace back to the 13th century when a chapel dedicated to Mary was established. In 1253, the German Knightly Order transferred the chapel to Klosterneuburg Abbey. A Gothic chapel was erected between 1414 and 1419 but faced repeated destruction over the centuries. It was damaged by Hungarian incursions in 1484, the First Ottoman Siege of Vienna in 1529, and again in 1683 during the Second Ottoman Siege. Despite these setbacks, the church was repeatedly repaired and rebuilt. The present-day church largely dates back to 1685, following its destruction during the Second Ottoman Siege. Expansions and renovations have shaped its current appearance. In the mid-19th century, around 1865, the church underwent significant alterations according to the plans of Carl Roesner, including an expansion towards the west and the addition of a neo-Gothic facade and bell tower. The church has long been a popular pilgrimage site. Maria Theresia, the revered Habsburg empress, held a special fondness for the church, visiting it daily during her stays at Schönbrunn Palace. Her patronage contributed to the church's embellishment and its elevation to parish status in 1786. Inside, visitors are greeted by artistic and historical details. The high altar, originally created by Matthias Steinl in 1698, was later modified in the mid-18th century.
