Bezirksmuseum 14. Penzing: A Journey Through Local History

Step back in time at the Bezirksmuseum 14. Penzing, a local heritage museum dedicated to preserving and showcasing the history of Vienna's 14th district. Founded in 1962, the museum is housed in a former municipal building dating back to 1873 and run by dedicated volunteers.The museum's twenty-five rooms on two floors are dedicated to the former villages of Baumgarten, Breitensee, Hadersdorf-Weidlingau, Hütteldorf and Penzing. Each room offers a glimpse into the distinct character and history of these communities, showcasing the traditions, industries, and personalities that shaped them. Explore exhibits that capture the essence of Penzing's past, including a historic grocer's shop, a lumberjack's hut, and workshops of local artisans like musical instrument makers and glove makers.The Bezirksmuseum Penzing also pays homage to famous residents, with dedicated spaces celebrating the lives and works of Otto Wagner, Gustav Klimt, Eduard Gurk, and Heinz Conrads. The museum also explores the natural landscape of the Wiental-Wienerwald, displaying the diverse flora and fauna of the Vienna Woods. A four-meter-long relief map depicts the five former communities of Penzing, offering a unique perspective on the district’s geographical layout and historical development. The museum boasts a collection of 75,000 items, including 9,500 photographs, 8,000 negatives, and 9,000 slides. The library comprises around 5,000 books.
