Währing Water Tower: A Historic Landmark

The Währing Water Tower, located in the Anton-Baumann-Park in Vienna's 18th district (Währing), is a historical monument with an interesting past. Constructed between 1836 and 1842 based on the plans of architect Paul Wilhelm Eduard Sprenger, it was part of the Kaiser-Ferdinands-Wasserleitung. This system pumped filtered water from the Danube Canal to elevated reservoirs, supplying the city.With a capacity of 141,250 liters, the Währing Water Tower played a crucial role in Vienna's water distribution. However, as the city grew, the system became inadequate, and the tower was gradually decommissioned after the opening of the First Vienna Mountain Spring Pipeline in 1873.Today, the Währing Water Tower no longer functions as part of the water supply. Although it requires renovation, plans are underway to restore the tower, potentially incorporating it into the ventilation system for the new U5 subway line. The surrounding Anton-Baumann-Park provides a green space with playgrounds and sports facilities, making it a local recreational area. The park also features a birch tree planted in memory of Johanna Dohnal, Austria's first female minister.
