Discover more about Aussichtsturm Paulinenwarte im Türkenschanzpark

Nestled within the verdant expanse of Türkenschanzpark, the Paulinenwarte stands as a testament to Vienna's rich history and its commitment to blending urban development with natural beauty. This 23-meter-high brick tower, constructed in the late 1800s, offers visitors a unique glimpse into the past while providing stunning views of the surrounding landscape. Emperor Franz Joseph I inaugurated the park and the tower in 1888, highlighting their significance to the city. The tower's design, by architect Anton Krones sen., mirrors the architectural style of the villas in the nearby Cottageviertel, reflecting a sense of civic pride and harmony with the urban landscape. Originally, the Paulinenwarte served a dual purpose: it was both an observation point and a water reservoir for the park. The lower section housed a tin tank fed by a nearby well, distributing water throughout the park via an underground system. The tower is named in honor of Princess Pauline Metternich, a prominent figure in Viennese society who donated many exotic plants to the Türkenschanzpark. The park itself was designed in the style of an English landscape garden, featuring meadows, hedges, ponds, and rock gardens. After falling into disrepair and being closed to the public in the mid-1970s, the Paulinenwarte underwent extensive renovations and reopened in August 2010. Today, the tower is managed by the Naturfreunde Währing and is open on select weekends from April to October, weather permitting. Visitors can climb the 89 steps to the top for a small admission fee. While the views may be partially obscured by mature trees, the experience of ascending this historic landmark and imagining Vienna as it was in the late 19th century is truly rewarding.
