Originally the Währing General Cemetery from 1783 to 1874, where many Viennese citizens were buried, including prominent figures. After World War I, the decision was made to convert the cemetery into a park, opening on October 12, 1923. City garden director Friedrich Kratochwjle designed the park to provide a recreational space for the densely populated surrounding neighborhoods while preserving as much of the existing tree population as possible. The park features diverse recreational facilities, including playgrounds with sandboxes, swings, and slides, making it a family-friendly destination. Sports enthusiasts can enjoy a basketball court, table tennis tables, a skate park, and a slackline. A football pitch is also available. The Familienbad Währinger Park, a family swimming pool within the park, offers a refreshing escape during the summer. Währinger Park is designed to be accessible to all visitors, with wheelchair-friendly paths. Dogs are allowed but must be leashed, with designated dog zones available. One of the park's unique features is the Denkmalhain, a memorial grove containing 58 historically significant gravestones from the former cemetery.
