Discover more about Neue Burg - Teil der Wiener Hofburg

The Neue Burg, or New Castle, is the most recent addition to the Hofburg Palace complex in Vienna, Austria. Construction began in 1881 as part of the Kaiserforum project, intended to create an imposing imperial center. However, due to financial constraints, political difficulties, and the end of the Habsburg monarchy, the project was never fully realized. The Neue Burg was finally completed in 1913, just before the outbreak of World War I. The building's architecture is a bombastic Neo-Baroque style, featuring a curved facade that embraces Heldenplatz. The facade is adorned with sculptures and reliefs depicting Austrian history. The Neue Burg was intended to serve as apartments for the imperial family and their guests, but these plans were cut short with the end of the empire. Today, the Neue Burg houses several museums that are part of the Kunsthistorisches Museum, including the Ephesus Museum, the Collection of Arms and Armor, and the Collection of Ancient Musical Instruments. These museums offer a rich display of historical artifacts and cultural treasures. The Austrian National Library also occupies a significant portion of the building. The terrace of the Neue Burg gained notoriety when Adolf Hitler addressed a cheering crowd from it in 1938, announcing Austria's annexation into Nazi Germany. Today, the terrace serves as a reminder of this dark period in history.
