Dürnstein Castle: A Ruined Fortress with a Royal Imprisonment
Discover the ancient Steinformationen of Dürnstein, where dramatic rocks meet historic architecture and vineyards in Austria's Wachau Valley.
The Steinformationen Dürnstein, or Stone Formations, are ancient geological formations of Gföhl Gneiss that contribute to the unique landscape of Dürnstein in the Wachau Valley. These rocks not only shape the terrain but also hold historical significance, serving as the foundation for Dürnstein Castle, where Richard the Lionheart was once imprisoned.
Opening times, essentials, and a few local tips gathered into one calmer, easier-to-scan planning section.
Walking
From the Dürnstein Parkplatz P2, walk towards the town center, passing the Unterloiben gate. Continue along the main street (Hauptstrasse), keeping the Danube River to your left. The Steinformationen will be visible on your right, forming the backdrop to the town. The path to Dürnstein Castle, which offers excellent views of the formations, is clearly signposted from the town center. Note that the walk to the castle involves a steep climb.
Public Transport

A single bus fare within the Wachau region costs approximately €2-€11, depending on the distance. Consider purchasing a 'Wachau Day Ticket' for €12 if you plan to use the bus for further exploration of the valley. This ticket also covers the Dürnstein-Rossatz ferry.

Parking is available at the Dürnstein Parkplatz P2, located just outside the town walls. Parking fees are approximately €4 for 2 hours, with increasing rates for longer durations.
