Discover more about Dominican Church

Located in the heart of Krems an der Donau, the Dominican Church stands as a testament to the city's architectural and cultural evolution. Constructed between 1240 and 1330 by Dominican monks, the church is a prime example of Gothic architecture in Lower Austria. The monks played a significant role in spreading education throughout the region. Over the centuries, the church has undergone several renovations and expansions, reflecting different architectural styles. In 1786, the Dominican Monastery was dissolved. The church has served many purposes, including a button factory, granary, theater, cinema, and fire department depot. The church's interior was altered, and a crypt was built under the choir. In 1891, a false ceiling was installed, and a museum room was created. Today, the Dominican Church serves as a venue for contemporary art exhibitions by the State Gallery each summer, blending sacred history with modern creativity. Visitors can admire the high altar, created in 1708 by Johann Georg Schmidt, and other artwork by Martin Johann Schmidt.
