Discover more about Castle Staatz

Visible from afar, the ruins of Castle Staatz rise dramatically from the Laa Plain on the Staatzer Berg. This imposing landmark, built in the 11th century as part of a planned settlement, offers visitors a unique combination of historical intrigue and breathtaking natural scenery. Strategically positioned, the castle provided commanding views of the surrounding countryside, making it a vital defensive structure. Over the centuries, it was held by various noble families and played a role in regional conflicts. In 1246, the castle served as a prison for Ulrich III, Duke of Carinthia, after he lost a battle to Frederick II, Duke of Austria. The castle experienced its zenith under the Lords of Maissau in the 13th century. Despite its formidable defenses, Castle Staatz met its demise during the Thirty Years' War. In 1645, Swedish troops under General Lennart Torstensson besieged and bombarded the castle, causing a fire that led to its abandonment. The ruined castle was later used as a quarry for the construction of a new residential castle at the foot of the mountain, which itself was destroyed in 1945. Today, the Staatzer Berg, including the castle ruins, is owned by the municipality and open to the public year-round. Visitors can explore the grounds, wander through the crumbling walls, and enjoy panoramic views of the Weinviertel landscape. Guided tours are available from May to October on Sundays, offering insights into the castle's history and the region's development. At the foot of the Staatzer Berg lies the Felsenbühne Staatz, one of Austria's largest open-air stages, hosting various musical performances.
