Discover more about Zwölferturm

The Zwölferturm, also known as the Torre delle Dodici, is Vipiteno's most recognizable landmark. This 46-meter-high tower , constructed between 1468 and 1472 , stands as a testament to the town's historical significance and architectural prowess. Designed by Hans Feur, the tower served as the upper town gate, dividing the old and new sections of Vipiteno. The tower's name, Zwölferturm (Twelve Tower), is said to originate from the tradition of its bells ringing at noon, calling residents to lunch. The tower is constructed of gray granite blocks sourced locally. Above the archway, marble tablets commemorate the laying of the foundation stone by Duke Sigismund of Austria in 1469. In 1867, a fire destroyed the original Gothic spire, which was subsequently replaced with the current embattled roof. Today, the Zwölferturm is a focal point of Piazza Città, surrounded by cafes, shops, and colorful buildings. While the tower is not always open for interior visits, it sometimes opens during special events like the Christmas Market, lantern parties in the summer, and the Dumpling Festival.
