Discover more about Vagif Mustafazadeh's House Museum

Nestled in the heart of Baku's ancient Icherisheher (Old City), the Vagif Mustafazadeh House Museum pays tribute to the life and work of Vagif Mustafazadeh, a legendary Azerbaijani jazz pianist and composer. Celebrated as the founder of jazz-mugham, Mustafazadeh uniquely fused traditional Azerbaijani music (mugham) with American jazz, leaving a lasting impact on 20th-century music. Established in 1989, the house-museum became a branch of the Azerbaijan State Museum of Musical Culture in 1994. It is a treasure trove of memorabilia, showcasing over 1200 artifacts related to the musician’s life and career. Visitors are transported back in time, surrounded by photographs, posters, gramophone records, and personal belongings that paint a vivid picture of Mustafazadeh’s world. The exhibits chronicle his early life in the Old City, his musical education, and his rise to fame as a groundbreaking jazz innovator. Among the most valuable exhibits are Mustafazadeh's piano, which was also Aziza Mustafazadeh's first piano, and a radio he used to listen to his favorite jazz musicians, despite the genre's prohibition in the USSR. The museum is housed in the very apartment where Vagif Mustafazadeh lived with his mother, Zivar khanum, who played a crucial role in nurturing his musical talent. The intimate setting provides a personal and immersive experience, allowing visitors to connect with the musician on a deeper level.
