Discover more about Seyid Yəhya Bakuvi Türbəsi

Located in the heart of Baku's Old City (Icherisheher), the Seyid Yahya Bakuvi Mausoleum stands as a tribute to Seyid Yahya Bakuvi, a prominent 15th-century philosopher, scientist, and Sufi scholar. He served in the court of Khalilullah I and was a follower of Sufism, authoring many religious texts. Bakuvi was born in Shamakhi and died in 1464 and was buried on the palace grounds. The mausoleum exemplifies northern Azerbaijani memorial architecture. The mausoleum has an octagonal prismatic form, topped with a conic stone cupola. This design is unusual for Baku and the Absheron Peninsula. Inside, the space is divided into overground and underground sections. The upper section was used for cultic rites, while the underground served as a burial vault. Three small windows with stone lattice designs filter light into the interior. The walls were constructed using specialized plastering techniques, incorporating wool for reinforcement. Historically, the mausoleum was connected to the Keygubad Mosque. Seyid Yahya Bakuvi taught and prayed in this mosque. The mosque was built in the 14th century but burned down in 1918, leaving only its foundation. Today, the Mausoleum is part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Palace of the Shirvanshahs complex.
