Discover more about Fountains Square

Fountains Square, or Fəvvarələr Meydanı, is Baku's cultural, social, and commercial hub. More than just a gathering place, it symbolizes Baku's evolution, blending history, European sophistication, and modern charm. The square's history dates back to 1868 when it was designated for military drills and parades, earning it the nickname "Parapet". It connected Icherisheher (Old City) with Baku's expanding suburbs. A water shortage left it barren, called the “Dry Garden” or “Fruitless Garden,” until 1899, when oil baron Haji Zeynalabdin Taghiyev financed the Shollar Water Pipeline. This brought clean water, transforming Baku into a green metropolis. The area officially became a park after the Shollar system's completion in 1916. In the 1950s, architect I. Tikhomirov redesigned the square, merging it with Nizami Square and adding landscaping. A 1984 upgrade introduced the decorative fountains that gave the plaza its name. A 2010 renovation added paving, restored facades, removed kiosks, and introduced bronze sculptures like “Girl on a Bench” and “Girl with an Umbrella”. Red curved lanterns were also added. Today, Fountains Square is surrounded by boutiques, shops, and restaurants. It connects to Nizami Street, Baku's premier shopping avenue. The square hosts concerts, festivals, and street performances. The fountains themselves are art installations, illuminated at night.
