Getting there

Driving

From Baku, head north on the M1 highway towards the Absheron Peninsula for approximately 30 km. Take the exit towards Shamakhi, and follow the signs for Chirag Gala. After reaching the vicinity of the coordinates (41.0878017, 48.9316702), you may need to park your car at a designated area nearby. The remaining distance to the historical site will require a walk. Parking is available near the site, but can be limited. Expect to pay around 2-3 AZN for parking.

Public Transport

To reach Chirag Gala by public transport from Baku, take a bus from the Baku International Bus Station heading to Guba. Alternatively, take a bus to Shabran. From Guba or Shabran, hire a taxi to the fortress. Be prepared for a short hike to reach the top of the mountain where the fortress is located. Bus fare from Baku to Shabran is approximately 9-13 AZN. A taxi from Shabran to Chirag Gala will cost approximately 20-30 AZN.

Walking

The final approach to Chirag Gala involves a walk, regardless of your initial mode of transport. From the nearest drop-off point (whether a bus stop or parking area), follow local signs or pathways leading towards the historical landmark. The walk may take 25-30 minutes from Mardakan bus stop. Ensure you have appropriate footwear, as some paths may be uneven.

Chirag Gala, meaning 'Lamp Castle' in Azerbaijani, is a captivating historical site located north of Baku. This ruined fortress, constructed by the Sassanid Persians in the 5th century, sits atop a mountain in the Guba Forest, offering panoramic views of the Caspian coastal plains.Originally, Chirag Gala was a key component of an extensive defensive system. Its strategic location allowed inhabitants to light torches, warning allies of approaching enemies, hence its name. The fortress was part of the Gilgilchay defensive system, which included Baku and Derbent fortresses. The fortress has 17 towers, which permit extensive views over the surrounding coastal plains.Used as late as the 18th century, Chirag Gala played a crucial role in defending the khanate of Quba. Today, it stands as a testament to Azerbaijan's rich history and architectural heritage, attracting tourists who brave the rocky climb for the rewarding views. The main tower remains remarkably well-preserved.
