The theater's history is deeply intertwined with the development of theatrical arts in Azerbaijan. The foundation of professional national theater was laid in 1873 with the performance of Mirza Fatali Akhundzadeh's comedy "The Vizier of the Lankaran Khanate". This event marked a significant milestone, paving the way for numerous theatrical troupes and societies that would eventually coalesce into state-recognized institutions. Najaf bey Vazirov, whose name the theater carries, was one of the founders of the Azerbaijan National Theater. In 1873, Vazirov, together with his teacher, Azerbaijani educationalist Hasan bey Malikov (Zardabi), staged the comedies “Haji Qara” (“The Adventures of the Miser”) and “Adventures of the Lankaran Khanate Vizier” by playwright Mirza Fatali Akhundov for the first time in Azerbaijani language. Since its establishment, the Lankaran State Drama Theater has staged a wide array of plays, encompassing both Azerbaijani classics and adaptations of international works. The repertoire includes pieces by renowned Azerbaijani playwrights such as Samed Vurghun and Mirza Fatali Akhundov, as well as adaptations of classics by Shakespeare and Ostrovski. Productions are performed in Azerbaijani, providing an authentic cultural experience. The theater's architecture is a blend of traditional and contemporary design. The interior features a well-designed auditorium that provides an intimate setting for performances. The theater has two tiers of halls intended for 553 spectators.
