    Discover more about Fountains Square

Fountains Square, or Fəvvarələr Meydanı, is the vibrant epicenter of Baku, Azerbaijan, where East meets West and ancient history intertwines with modern aspirations. More than just a public space, it's a living tapestry woven with threads of history, culture, and the everyday lives of Baku's residents.Originally conceived in the 19th century, the square served as a parade ground known as the "Dry Garden" or "Fruitless Garden". The transformation began in the late 19th century with the arrival of clean water, thanks to the vision of philanthropist Taghiyev, who financed the construction of a pipeline bringing potable water to the city. Over the years, several attempts were made to landscape the square, but it was only after the completion of the Shollar Water Supply in 1916 that the square began to evolve into a park.Throughout the 20th century, the square underwent several redesigns and renovations, reflecting the changing political and social landscape of Azerbaijan. In 1920, under Soviet rule, it was briefly renamed Karl Marx Square. In the 1950s, architect Ivan Tikhomirov initiated a wide-scale replanning, introducing new fountains and trees, further solidifying its role as a green space. The modern history of Fountains Square began in 2010, with a comprehensive renovation that removed street kiosks, laid new paving, and installed bronze genre sculptures, such as "Girl on a Bench" and "Girl with an Umbrella," along with red curved lanterns.Today, Fountains Square is a hub for shopping, dining, and cultural events. The square is surrounded by boutiques, designer stores, local artisan shops, sidewalk cafes, and fine-dining restaurants. It frequently hosts live concerts, festivals, public celebrations, and street performances, making it a year-round destination for cultural events in Baku.
