Born in a Baku suburb in 1895, Sorge became one of the most accomplished spies of his time, operating undercover as a German journalist in both Nazi Germany and the Empire of Japan.The monument, erected in 1981, was initiated by Heydar Aliyev, then president of Azerbaijan. Sculpted by Vladimir Tsigal, with architects Rasim Aliev, Leonid Pavlov, and Y. Dubov, the monument is an oblong, curved bronze plaque reminiscent of a radar installation. The sculpture features a relief image of Sorge's face with piercing eyes, symbolizing his focused and scrutinizing nature. Some claim the monument features fake bullet holes and that the eyes light up at night. The monument is framed by pines, plane trees, and mulberry trees, with a cherry tree planted nearby using soil brought from Japan.Sorge's intelligence work provided crucial information to the Soviet Union, influencing military strategy during the war. He was arrested in Japan in 1941 and executed in 1944. The Soviet Union posthumously awarded him the title of Hero of the Soviet Union in 1964, solidifying his place in Soviet history.
