Discover more about Fountains Square

Fountains Square, or Fəvvarələr Meydanı in Azerbaijani, is the vibrant heart of Baku, Azerbaijan. Known to older generations as “Parapet,” the square has transformed from a barren parade ground into a dynamic hub. Its evolution mirrors Baku's journey from an ancient city to a modern metropolis. Originally, in the 19th century, the area served as a space for military drills and was called the “Dry Garden” due to Baku's water shortage. The square's transformation began in the late 19th century with the arrival of clean water, thanks to oil baron Haji Zeynalabdin Taghiyev, who financed the Shollar Water Pipeline. This allowed for the planting of trees and greenery. During the Soviet era, the square underwent further development, with the installation of numerous fountains, giving it its current name. In 2010, a comprehensive renovation added elegant paving, restored historic facades, and introduced bronze sculptures like the “Girl on a Bench”. Red curved lanterns were also added, creating a warm glow in the evenings. Today, Fountains Square is surrounded by a mix of historical buildings, boutiques, restaurants, and cafes. The architecture showcases a blend of European and Azerbaijani styles. The square hosts numerous public events, festivals, and concerts throughout the year.
