Discover more about Azerbaijan State Puppet Theatre

Step into a world of fantasy at the Azerbaijan State Puppet Theatre, a cultural landmark in Baku since 1931. The theater is located in a stunning building that was originally constructed in 1910 as the 'Phenomenon' movie theatre by Polish architect Józef Płoszko. The building itself is a piece of history, initially designed in an eclectic style and later remodeled in 1921 by Azerbaijani architect Zivar bey Ahmadbeyov. Over the years, the building has served various purposes, including a cinema, casino, and even a museum, before becoming the permanent home of the State Puppet Theatre. In 1974, the theater was named after the renowned Azeri author Abdulla Shaig. Today, it continues to enchant audiences with its delightful puppet shows performed in both Azerbaijani and Russian. The theater has both Azerbaijani and Russian sections. For the first time in the theater plays of Azerbaijani, Russian and Western European dramatists (in simplified form), works of educational motives based on Azerbaijan oral folk literature were performed. The theater's collection of puppets ranges from a few centimeters to larger-than-life figures, operated by skilled puppeteers who bring stories to life. The repertoire includes classic tales and contemporary works, with performances for children and adults. The Azerbaijan State Puppet Theatre has participated in International festivals of Puppet Theatre (Tashkent, 1979, Bombay, 1980) and the South Caucasus (Yerevan, 1982, Tbilisi, 1984). A visit to the Azerbaijan State Puppet Theatre promises a memorable experience filled with wonder and imagination.
