Fountains Square, or Fəvvarələr Meydanı, is Baku's primary gathering spot, drawing locals and tourists with its charming ambiance and picturesque scenery. The square's history dates back to the 19th century when the area was designated for military drills and parades, earning it the nickname "Parapet". It served as a connector between Icherisheher (Old City) and the expanding suburbs. Initially barren due to water shortages, it was called the "Dry Garden" or "Fruitless Garden". In 1899, the Shollar Water Pipeline, financed by Haji Zeynalabdin Taghiyev, brought clean water to Baku, transforming the area. Although plans to build an Orthodox church or monument were unrealized, the area became a park after the pipeline's completion in 1916. In the 1950s, architect I. Tikhomirov redesigned the square, merging it with Nizami Square and adding landscaping. A 1984 upgrade introduced decorative fountains, giving the plaza its modern name. A 2010 renovation added paving, restored facades, removed kiosks, and introduced bronze sculptures like “Girl on a Bench”. The fountains themselves are art installations, illuminated at night to create a magical atmosphere. The square's blend of architectural styles, from Belle Époque to modern, reflects Baku's diverse history.
