Discover more about The Pearling Path

The Pearling Path, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2012, is a 3.5-kilometer journey through Muharraq's rich history as a center of the pearl trade. Before oil, pearling was the Persian Gulf's main commodity, and Muharraq emerged as the region's pearling center in the late 19th century. The path connects the beach where pearl divers once set off to the residences of former divers, impressive merchant homes, and other historic sites. The path includes 17 buildings in Muharraq, three pearl beds (Hayrat), and part of the Bu Maher Fort and coastline, from where the pearl diving ships once set sail. Visitors can explore the homes of pearl merchants, captains, and divers, as well as shops that supplied the pearling voyages. The path offers a fascinating journey tracing pearls from the seabed to merchants' gatherings. Visitors can start at either the Qal'at Bu Mahir Visitor's Centre by the seashore or the Pearling Path Visitor and Experience Centre near Suq Al Qaysariyyah, or from Siyadi Majlis. Follow the pearl-shaped streetlights through the streets and alleyways of historic Muharraq. The Pearling Path is a living open-air museum, documenting a particular period in Bahrain's history when its economy depended largely on pearling trades.
