Al Fateh Grand Mosque: A Bahraini Icon

The Al Fateh Grand Mosque, located in Manama, Bahrain, stands as a testament to Islamic architecture and cultural significance. Built in 1987 by the late Sheikh Isa Bin Salman Al Khalifa, it was named in honor of Ahmed Al Fateh, the founder of modern Bahrain. Encompassing 6,500 square meters, the mosque can accommodate over 7,000 worshippers, making it one of the largest mosques in the world. The mosque's architecture is a blend of modern and traditional Islamic styles, designed by Egyptian architect Ahmed Juma. The most striking feature is the massive fiberglass dome, weighing over 60 tons, which was once the largest in the world. The interior is adorned with Italian marble, Indian teak wood, and Austrian chandeliers, with Kufic calligraphy embellishing the walls. Beyond its religious function, the Al Fateh Grand Mosque is a major tourist attraction. It is open to visitors from 9 am to 4 pm, except on Fridays, and offers free guided tours in multiple languages. The mosque also houses the National Library of Bahrain, which contains approximately 7,000 books, some over 100 years old, including religious texts and historical journals. Visitors are required to dress modestly, and women are provided with abayas (cloaks) and headscarves. The mosque serves as a symbol of Bahrain's commitment to religious tolerance and cultural exchange, welcoming people of all faiths to appreciate its beauty and learn about Islamic traditions.
