Al Fateh Grand Mosque: A Beacon of Islamic Art

Al Fateh Grand Mosque, also known as the Al-Fateh Islamic Center, is a prominent landmark in Manama, Bahrain, celebrated for its architectural grandeur and cultural significance. Built in 1987 by the late Sheikh Isa Bin Salman Al Khalifa, it was named in honor of Ahmed Al Fateh, the conqueror of Bahrain. The mosque is not only a place of worship but also a major tourist attraction, offering visitors a glimpse into Islamic art and Bahraini culture.Encompassing 6,500 square meters, the mosque can accommodate over 7,000 worshippers, making it one of the largest mosques in the world. Its most striking feature is the massive 60-tonne fiberglass dome, once the largest of its kind globally. The interior boasts Italian marble flooring, a stunning Austrian chandelier, and intricately carved teak doors from India. Kufic calligraphy adorns the walls, adding to the mosque's artistic and spiritual ambiance.Visitors can explore the mosque's main prayer hall and admire the delicate crystal chandeliers and the exquisite mosaics on the underside of the dome. Since 2006, the mosque has also housed the Bahrain National Library, containing approximately 7,000 books, some over a century old, including books of Hadith, the Global Arabic Encyclopedia, and Al-Azhar journals. The Al-Fateh Islamic Center also promotes education and understanding of the Islamic faith.The mosque is open to visitors from 9 am to 4 pm, except on Fridays and public holidays. Guided tours are available in multiple languages, providing insights into Islamic principles, Bahraini culture, and the mosque's artistic elements. Modest dress is required; women are provided with headscarves and abayas.
