Discover more about The Pearling Path

The Pearling Path, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2012, is a 3.5-kilometer trail located in Muharraq, Bahrain, that showcases the island's rich history as a center of the pearl trade. This path weaves through the old city, connecting a series of significant sites, including oyster beds, the Bu Mahir Fort, and 17 historical structures. These buildings, once residences, trading posts, and storehouses, offer a glimpse into the lives of pearl merchants, divers, and boat builders who thrived in this area. The pearling industry, which flourished from the 2nd century until the 1930s, shaped Bahrain's economy and social fabric. Muharraq, as the capital and most active pearling city, became a hub for pearl divers and related professions. The pearls were traded as far as Europe and India, contributing to the island's prosperity. The discovery of oil and the rise of Japanese cultured pearls led to the decline of Bahrain's pearling industry. The Pearling Path project began in 2012 with the goal of preserving and restoring this historical area. The restoration efforts included homes, palaces, mosques, and the creation of public squares. Visitors can explore the path, marked by pearl-shaped streetlights, starting from the Qal'at Bu Mahir Visitor's Centre or the Pearling Path Visitor and Experience Centre. The Pearling Path Visitor and Experience Centre, designed by Valerio Olgiati, features a distinctive roof structure and interactive exhibits.
