Dharmasagar, a man-made lake in the heart of Cumilla, Bangladesh, offers a serene escape and a glimpse into the region's history. Built in 1458 by Maharaja Dharma Manikya I, it provided a vital water source and has evolved into a beloved landmark for recreation and reflection.
Opening times, essentials, and a few local tips gathered into one calmer, easier-to-scan planning section.
Walking
If you are already near the central area of Cumilla (e.g., Kandirpar, Town Hall), Dharmasagar is easily accessible by foot. From Kandirpar, head north towards the Cumilla Zilla School. Dharmasagar will be on your left. The walk is approximately 15-20 minutes and allows you to experience the local atmosphere. There are no specific costs associated with walking, but be mindful of pedestrian traffic and road crossings.
Rickshaw/Auto-Rickshaw
From any point within Cumilla city, the most convenient way to reach Dharmasagar is by rickshaw or auto-rickshaw (CNG). These are readily available throughout the city. Simply tell the driver you wish to go to 'Dharmasagar' or 'Dharmasagar Par' (the bank of Dharmasagar). Fares should be negotiated beforehand, typically ranging from 30-80 BDT depending on the distance and your starting location within the city. Landmarks to look out for include Cumilla Zilla School and Cumilla Stadium, which are located on the eastern side of the lake.
Public Transport
If arriving at Comilla Railway Station or any of the major bus terminals (Shashongachha or Jangalia), take a local CNG or auto-rickshaw to Kandirpar. From Kandirpar, you can easily find another CNG or rickshaw to Dharmasagar, which is a short ride away. The fare from the railway station or bus terminal to Kandirpar should be around 30-50 BDT by CNG, and the subsequent ride to Dharmasagar should cost an additional 30-50 BDT. Alternatively, from Comilla Bus Terminal heading towards Laksham, the bus fare is typically around 30-50 BDT. Ask the conductor to drop you off at the R141 junction. From there, you can either walk (about 2 kilometers) or hire a CNG auto-rickshaw (approximately 100 BDT) to reach Dharmasagar.
Use Dharmasagar as your starting point for nearby food, family ideas, nightlife, and more local discoveries.
