Discover more about Binat Bibi Masjid

Nestled in the heart of Narinda, Dhaka, the Binat Bibi Mosque is the city's oldest surviving mosque, dating back to 1454. Constructed during the reign of Sultan Nasiruddin Mahmud Shah by Bakht Binat, the daughter of Marhamat, this historical site offers a glimpse into the pre-Mughal architectural style prevalent in Bengal. The mosque's origins are linked to a Persian merchant, Arkan Ali, who resided in Narinda and built the mosque for a small congregation. Legend says his daughter, Binat Bibi, passed away suddenly and was buried near the mosque, leading to the edifice being named in her honor. The original structure featured a square layout topped with a single hemispherical dome, showcasing curved cornices, battlements, and octagonal corner turrets. Over the centuries, the mosque has undergone several renovations and extensions, including the addition of a new dome in 1930 and a mihrab in 1962. While these modifications have altered some of its original features, the mosque retains its historical essence, with remnants of its past still visible. Today, the Binat Bibi Mosque serves as a vibrant center of religious and community life, accommodating up to 3,000 worshipers. Visitors can admire the blend of pre-Mughal and later architectural influences, step inside to experience the serene atmosphere, and appreciate the intricate details of the mihrab, dome, and walls. The mosque also houses a Maktab, where students learn Arabic and the fundamentals of Islam. Exploring the surrounding Narinda area offers further immersion into Dhaka's cultural heritage, with narrow streets, local cuisine, and hidden gems awaiting discovery.
