Discover more about Idrakpur Fort Entry Gate

Idrakpur Fort, situated in Munshiganj, Bangladesh, was erected around 1660 AD by Mir Jumla II, a Subahdar (governor) of Bengal under the Mughal Empire. The fort's strategic location at the junction of several rivers, including the Meghna, Shitalakshya, Ichamati, and Dhaleshwari, made it a crucial defensive point. Its primary purpose was to establish Mughal control in the area and protect Dhaka and Narayanganj from Magh and Portuguese pirates who frequently looted cities like Sonargaon and Bikrampur. The fort was an integral part of a triangular defense strategy, working in conjunction with the Hajiganj Fort and Sonakanda Fort in Narayanganj. Idrakpur Fort served as a naval base, housing a fleet of 200 frigates under Mughal Admiral Abul Hossain. The architecture of Idrakpur Fort distinguishes it from other Mughal forts with its unique features. The fort is divided into eastern and western sections. The western part features a quadrangular layout with an open area of 82m x 72m, enclosed by a wall with bastions at the corners. Machicolations in the walls allowed defenders to target enemies on the river. The eastern part, trapezoidal in shape, appears to be a later extension. Today, Idrakpur Fort is a protected monument maintained by the Department of Archaeology, Bangladesh. Visitors can explore the fort's historical architecture and enjoy the peaceful ambiance. The fort is open from 10 AM to 6 PM. A nominal entry fee applies, with potential discounts for students and senior citizens.
