Discover more about Oxford Mission Epiphany Cathedral Church

The Oxford Mission Epiphany Cathedral Church, often called the Oxford Mission Church, is a prominent religious and historical site in Barisal, Bangladesh. As part of the Church of Bangladesh, this Anglican church is a place of worship and a significant architectural landmark, attracting tourists and pilgrims. Its history, design, and serene environment offer a unique experience for visitors. Founded in 1903 by the Oxford Mission, the church's origins trace back to the late 19th century when Christian missionaries established a presence in the Barisal region. The Oxford Mission, driven by spreading Christianity and providing social services, established a brotherhood in 1895, followed by a sisterhood in 1902. These groups focused on evangelism, medical work, and education, especially for women. Sister Edith Langridge designed the church, and Father E.L. Strong oversaw its completion in 1907, with Frederick Douglass serving as the engineer. The church's architecture blends Greek and colonial styles. The red-brick structure appears multi-storied from the outside but is a single-story building with a high ceiling and a large prayer hall. This design creates grandeur and spaciousness, accommodating large congregations. The church features numerous doors on three sides, forty archways, and many corridors that enhance its aesthetic appeal and structural integrity. A large cross from Bethlehem adds historical and religious significance. The interior features intricate wood carvings and marble floors, reflecting the craftsmanship of its construction. The church stands on 35 acres, enclosed by high walls and rows of palm trees, creating a tranquil environment. The grounds include ponds, the Oxford Mission Primary and High Schools, a hospital, a library, student residences, and living quarters for the bishop, father, and sisters. The red brick bell tower houses a giant bell rung seven times daily, five minutes before prayers and also serves as the church's office space. The church has survived natural disasters, maintaining its original appearance from 1903 and symbolizing communal harmony and cultural heritage in Bangladesh.
