Discover more about Shashi Lodge

Shashi Lodge, or Mymensingh Rajbari, stands as a testament to the opulence of the zamindars during the British Raj. Maharaja Suryakanta Acharya Chowdhury of the Muktagacha Zamindari Estate originally built the lodge in the late 19th century, naming it after his adopted son, Shashikanta Acharya Chowdhury. The original two-story structure, built in 1877, was damaged in the Great Indian Earthquake of 1897. Shashikanta Acharya Chowdhury rebuilt it between 1905 and 1911 as a single-story palace, blending European and Bengali architectural styles. The palace features grand arches, Corinthian columns, and intricate carvings. A sprawling garden welcomes visitors with a marble fountain and a statue of the Roman goddess Venus. The main building, constructed with red bricks and yellow walls, has 18 spacious rooms. Inside, a large hall with a timber floor once served as a ballroom, adorned with elaborate glass chandeliers. After the zamindari system was abolished in 1950, Shashi Lodge was used as a training center for women teachers. In 2015, the Directorate of Archeology of the Government of Bangladesh acquired the lodge and transformed it into a museum. Today, visitors can explore the restored rooms and exhibits, gaining insights into the zamindari system and the Acharya Chowdhury family. The lodge is located by the Brahmaputra River in the heart of Mymensingh.
