Lalbagh Fort, also known as Fort Aurangabad, stands on the banks of the Buriganga River in Old Dhaka as a testament to the Mughal Empire's architectural prowess and unfulfilled ambitions. Construction of the fort began in 1678 by Prince Muhammad Azam, the son of Emperor Aurangzeb, who was then serving as the viceroy of Bengal. However, his stay was short-lived, and he was soon called back to Delhi by his father, leaving the fort incomplete.The fort's construction was then overseen by Shaista Khan, the new governor of Dhaka. However, tragedy struck when his beloved daughter, Pari Bibi, died in 1684. Devastated by her death, Shaista Khan halted construction, deeming the fort unlucky, and it has remained unfinished ever since. Despite its incomplete state, Lalbagh Fort is a magnificent complex with three main sections: the Mausoleum of Pari Bibi, the Diwan-i-Aam (Hall of Audience), and the Quilla Mosque.The Tomb of Pari Bibi is a central feature of the fort, serving as the mausoleum of Pari Bibi. The tomb is the most significant of the Mughal buildings inside the fort. It features white marble and black basalt, surrounded by a well-manicured garden. The Diwan-i-Aam served as a venue for public gatherings and administrative meetings. The three-domed Quilla Mosque features intricate tile work and floral motifs. The fort also features a large water reservoir.Recent excavations have revealed additional structures, including a network of underground tunnels, utility buildings, stables, and a roof garden. These tunnels are said to have been used by soldiers during the Sepoy Revolution in 1857, adding to the fort's mystery. Today, Lalbagh Fort is maintained by the Archaeological Department of Bangladesh and attracts millions of visitors every year. It offers a serene escape from the bustling city, with its well-tended gardens and historical structures providing a glimpse into Dhaka's rich Mughal heritage.
