Discover more about Nijhum Dwip

Nijhum Dwip, translating to 'Silent Island' in Bengali, is a hidden gem nestled in the Noakhali district of Bangladesh. This island emerged in the 1940s from the Meghna River estuary and the Bay of Bengal, initially drawing fishermen who named it 'Ichamati dwip' due to the abundance of prawns. Over time, it became known as Nijhum Dwip, a sanctuary of peace and natural beauty. The island's landscape is a unique blend of ecosystems, featuring expansive mangrove forests, sandy beaches, and tidal mudflats. The Forest Department's afforestation project in 1974 transformed the island, creating a thriving mangrove forest that provides a habitat for diverse flora and fauna. Declared a National Park in 2001, Nijhum Dwip stands as a testament to Bangladesh's commitment to preserving its natural heritage. The island is renowned for its population of spotted deer, introduced in the 1970s, which now numbers in the thousands. It also attracts a myriad of migratory birds during the winter months, making it a paradise for birdwatchers. Visitors can explore the mangrove forests, spot wildlife, take boat trips through the canals, and immerse themselves in the tranquil beauty of this coastal sanctuary. Nijhum Dwip offers a unique opportunity to experience the untouched beauty of rural Bangladesh. The island's remote location and friendly locals create an immersive cultural experience.
