The Mausoleum of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, located in Tungipara, Gopalganj, is a significant historical and cultural site dedicated to the memory of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father of Bangladesh. This grand monument serves not only as his final resting place but also as a symbol of national pride and resilience for the Bangladeshi people. After Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's assassination in 1975, he was buried in his ancestral home in Tungipara. For many years, access to the gravesite was restricted. In 1994, architect Ehsan Khan, Ishtiaq Zahir, and Iqbal Habib were commissioned to convert Bangabandhu's residence in Dhaka into a museum. Following the completion of this project in 1995, Sheikh Hasina, his daughter and the current Prime Minister, requested them to design a mausoleum complex in Tungipara. Construction began in 1998, and the mausoleum was inaugurated on June 15, 2001. The mausoleum complex is designed to disseminate the philosophy and personality of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. It aims to convey the national history, culture, and traditions of Bangladesh, inspiring future generations to build a better future. The complex includes a museum, a library with 6,000 books, temporary and permanent exhibition spaces, an open-air theater with green rooms, souvenir shops, a mosque, an information center, a security guard room, and a public plaza. In the museum, tourists will find many pictures of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Inside the memorial, there is a paternal house filled with childhood memories of Bangabandhu. The tomb, constructed of red ceramic and black and white marble, houses the graves of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his parents. The grave is clad in white marble and surrounded by a dome. Light filters into the tomb through latticed walls and carved glass above, creating a serene and contemplative atmosphere. The museum within the complex showcases numerous photographs and personal artifacts of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, offering visitors a glimpse into his life and political career. The museum serves as a shrine to his memory and the spirit of the liberation struggle. Adjacent to the mausoleum is Bangabandhu's ancestral home.
