Discover more about Gun Hill Signal Station

Perched on a hilltop in St. George, Gun Hill Signal Station offers visitors a unique blend of history and stunning scenery. Built in 1818, two years after Barbados' only slave revolt, it was the key station in a chain used to signal the approach of ships and warn of potential threats. From this strategic vantage point, signals could be relayed to other stations across the island in minutes, ensuring the island's defense. Beyond its military significance, Gun Hill also served as a recovery station for soldiers during epidemics. The grounds feature beautifully landscaped gardens with tropical flowers and trees, offering a tranquil setting for relaxation. Inside the hexagonal signal tower, you'll find a collection of military memorabilia, providing a glimpse into Barbados' colonial past. A highlight of Gun Hill is the iconic lion statue, carved from a single piece of coral limestone in 1868 by Captain Henry Wilkinson. The lion stands as a symbol of British imperial power, with an inscription that translates to 'He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, and from the river, unto the ends of the earth'. Today, Gun Hill Signal Station is maintained by the Barbados National Trust and offers arguably the most magnificent view of Barbados. From the tower, you can see the rolling hills of St. George, the capital city of Bridgetown, and the sparkling Caribbean Sea.
