Garrison Savannah: A Historic Racetrack

The Garrison Savannah, a jewel in the Garrison Historic Area (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), has been the heart of horse racing in Barbados since 1845. Initially, the British Regiment stationed in Barbados used the Savannah as a parade ground, but it soon transformed into a venue where officers raced against wealthy merchants and plantation owners. This tradition evolved into the Barbados Turf Club, established in 1905, which organizes horse racing events throughout the year. The Garrison Savannah is more than just a racetrack; it's a vibrant recreational area enjoyed by people of all ages. When it's not hosting races, you'll find locals jogging, playing rugby and football (soccer), flying kites, or simply relaxing and enjoying the atmosphere. The annual Independence Day Parade also takes place here. The track itself is an oval turf course spanning six furlongs, hosting races of varying lengths. The highlight of the racing season is the Sandy Lane Barbados Gold Cup, a prestigious event that attracts thoroughbred owners, jockeys, and trainers from around the world. Surrounding the Savannah are several significant historical buildings, including the Main Guard House and Clock Tower, the Barbados Museum and Historical Society, St Ann's Fort, and George Washington House, where the first U.S. President once resided. A network of subterranean tunnels was discovered beneath the area in 2012.
