Discover more about Gun Hill Signal Station

Strategically perched on a hilltop in St. George, Gun Hill Signal Station offers arguably the best views of Barbados. Built in 1818, two years after Barbados' only slave revolt, it was the finest of a chain of signal stations used to signal approaching ships. These stations played a crucial role in spotting vessels, relaying information, and alerting the island's defenses. Beyond its military function, Gun Hill also served as a recovery station for soldiers during epidemics. The station's grounds feature beautifully landscaped gardens with tropical flowers and trees. The hexagonal tower houses an interesting collection of military memorabilia. A highlight is the iconic lion statue carved from a single piece of coral limestone in 1868 by Captain Henry Wilkinson. The statue stands as a symbol of British imperial power. Restored by the Barbados National Trust in 1982, Gun Hill Signal Station is now open to the public. Visitors can explore the station, enjoy the panoramic views, and learn about Barbados' rich history.
