Discover more about Gun Hill Signal Station

Gun Hill Signal Station, located in the parish of St. George, is more than just a scenic viewpoint; it's a portal into Barbados' rich history and strategic importance in the Caribbean. Built in 1818, two years after Barbados' only slave revolt, it was the finest of six signal stations used to spot approaching ships, warn of potential invasions, and ensure internal security. The station played a vital role in communicating important information across the island, from relaying meeting information for the Council of Barbados to issuing hurricane warnings. Strategically positioned on the highlands of St. George, Gun Hill commands a magnificent view from east through south to the west. The complex included a signal tower, living quarters, a kitchen, and a magazine. The hexagonal shape of the tower indicates that it was rebuilt at some point. Over time, the introduction of the telephone led to the discontinuation of the signal stations, and they fell into disrepair. In 1981, the Barbados National Trust leased the station from the government and began restoration, opening it to the public in 1982. Today, visitors can explore the station's military memorabilia, learn about the signal system, and admire the panoramic views. The grounds are beautifully landscaped with tropical flowers and trees. A notable feature is the Gun Hill Lion, a sculpture carved from a single piece of coral stone in 1868 by Captain Henry Wilkinson.
